| This year's travel adventure in early August was a river cruise down the Danube from Hungary to Romania, as shown in the map below. We travelled once again with our friends Ken and Barb Jonker. We spent two days in Budapest before boarding the ship. We had visited Budapest once before in 1991 over a long weekend; the city remains as beautiful as we remembered it. Our 7 day cruise included stops in Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania with numerous side trips. The following web pages show the highlights of the trip. We especially appreciated the opportunity to learn more about these five Eastern European countries, which are significantly different from those in Western Europe, where we have travelled most often. |
| This cruise was formally labeled as "Gems of Southeast Europe 2019 Wine Cruise". We chose it primarily for its exposure to Eastern Europe, but the wine experience was very interesting, mostly in terms of the extensive local history of wine making; the quality in general was ok, but not great. On board with us was the family that owns Patland Estate Winery in Napa, which was unknown to us. It is a boutique winery off Silverado Trail in Napa. Their wines were very good, but expensive by our standards. One of their better cabs listed for $155. |
